Traffic Stop Turns Drug Arrest

On July 17 at approximately 4:30 am, Officers with the Monroe City Police Department initiated a traffic stop on South Main near Lawn Street. The probable cause for the stop was speed (46 mph in a 35 mph zone). While making contact with the driver, Eric Madden, Monroe City, Officers detected a strong odor of marijuana coming from the vehicle. A search incident to arrest was performed on the vehicle due to reasonable suspicion of the smell.

A large amount of Marijuana (approximately 13.8 ounces or 393 grams) was located inside the vehicle. Other items found were marijuana wax/shatter, alcohol, drug paraphernalia and a loaded handgun containing a high capacity magazine.

Madden was taken into custody for felony possession of a controlled substance with intent to distribute and was transported to the Police Department for booking purposes. Madden was then transported to the Monroe County Jail on a 24 hour investigative hold pending charges from the Monroe County Prosecutors Office.
