Annual Fire Prevention Poster Contest Announces Winners
The 2017 Fire Prevention Poster contest, sponsored by the Paris Rural Fire Protection District, produced several winners from the Paris Elementary School.
This year’s theme was “Don’t Wait, Check the Date. Change Your Smoke Alarms Every 10 years.” Macey Shatzer, was a 3rd Place State Level Winner in the 3rd and 4th Grade Division. County winners included Abby Wheeler, Madelyn Wheeler, Meghan Kirkwood, Natalie Dreisewerd, Chase Roehl, Raygen Crum, Zackary Conboy, and Whitney Crist.
According to Cy Fields, member of the Paris fire department, the contest has three grade divisions, 1-2, 3-4, and 5-6, and all divisions are given the same guidelines mandated by the Fire Fighters Association of Missouri. The county level contest began in March and ended in April. Participating students were given one month to complete their entry. The three county winners in each division were picked by three anonymous judges.
All county level winners won a t-shirt announcing they were a “Fire Poster Contest Winner.” All local winners’ posters were submitted to the state level competition at the Annual FFAM State Fire Convention and were judged against the other winners from the state of Missouri. Three anonymous judges chose the state winners, who received prize money and a trip to the Missouri State Fair for their entire family, featuring free carnival rides for the day. They will also spend time at the Missouri State Fair Fire Departments. The winning posters are displayed on the FFAM website and in the Missouri Division of Fire – Fire Marshall’s office.
Fields said, “I myself love getting involved with the kids and teaching them fire prevention and safety. I’m proud to know that our kids in our district work so hard to learn and help teach fire prevention and safety to their families and friends. Our kids are absolutely amazing and are always glad to see us firefighters.”
