Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Returns to Northeast Missouri

January 09, 2019

A nearly twenty year tradition of free income tax preparation in Northeast Missouri will continue this year under the sponsorship of the Monroe City Senior Nutrition Center, Shelby County Senior Citizens Assoc. and Senior Citizens Community Center of Paris. The partnership includes the sponsorship of the Internal Revenue Service and the oversight and training of the University of Missouri Extension Service. The VITA program provides free simple income tax assistance to taxpayers with an annual income of approximately $60,000 or less. VITA volunteers do only simple tax returns – no farm or small business returns. Taxpayers who benefit most are those struggling to pay bills. This is especially true for those on a fixed income who must be careful with their spending.
Volunteers complete rigorous training and testing to work in the program. They greet, assist with intake paperwork, prepare the returns, conduct the quality review and transmit tax return electronically. The volunteer reward for this worthwhile program is helping a family resolve financial stress. The client’s tax return may be the largest lump sum of money they receive all year. Clients use their return to catch up bills, make a down payment on a large needed purchase, or to fix a budget situation.

Here are some important things to remember
Tax returns are prepared by appointment only.

You will need a picture ID, your social security card, W-2’s and 2017 tax return
